Opening Keynote: We're Done 'Getting By': It's Time to Rediscover Our 'Why'

01/16/2024 4:00 PM
Location: DeLorean (ASC1A&B) Giving 110% is what camp people are known for, and yet the last few years has seemed to require 1000% just to get by, leaving many of us feeling a little out of touch with our "why." Why do we "do" this camp life? The reason might be buried a bit deep under the toll of recent complications, but at the core, it hasn't changed. It's because our work makes a difference, helps raise kids up, puts our young staff on a positive professional course, changes lives, and, lest we forget, comes with unlimited s'mores. At a time when we could all use both a gentle reminder that our efforts matter, and a moment to celebrate successes, let's highlight the path forward on the other side of this "new normal." Join Emily for an engaging conversation and connections event where we rediscover our passion, engage with others in the room, and reconnect to the core of why we love cam

Understanding & Supporting Neurodiversity/Neurodivergence

01/17/2024 10:45 AM
Location: DeLorean (ASC1A&B) Neurodiversity is a recognition and celebration of the unique way different brains work. Rather than problems to be fixed, learning disabilities, autism, and other intellectual or cognitive challenges are valuable human variations that allow for individuality to thrive. That said, many neurodiversities do lead to specific traits that others can find confusing or hard to handle, such as communication differences, sensory defensiveness, and a tendency to misinterpret social situations. This session will introduce staff to the various neurodiversities they can expect to find among your camper and staff populations; they will walk away more confident in their efforts towards inclusion, with concrete, applicable strategies for proactive behavior management, relationship building, and increased emotional well-being.

Building Grit, Resilience, and Coping Skills – in our Campers, Staff/Volunteers, and Ourselves

01/17/2024 1:00 PM
Location: DeLorean (ASC1A&B) Awareness of mental health needs is at an all-time high, but as camp professionals we are still learning how we can best support all who are part of our camp communities. In mainstream media, social media, and other arenas we are hearing more about “Adverse Childhood Events” (ACEs), trauma and “trauma-informed care,” and the “mental health crisis” in the United States… but what do we do about it? Being intentional about how we train our staff to listen to and support our campers, how we do the same for our staff, and how we take care of ourselves in the process is key. This session will offer practical tips on how we can meet everyone where they are – and help elevate them to the next level.
